1. Pile on the Compost

Compost is pure gold for your garden. Spreading a 1 to 2-inch layer of organic compost over your garden beds adds vital nutrients and feeds beneficial soil microbes. It loosens heavy clay so roots can breathe and helps sandy soil retain moisture.

2. Put Down a Layer of Mulch

Never leave your soil bare! Cover it with natural mulch like straw, shredded leaves, or wood chips. Mulch acts like a protective blanket. It prevents weeds, locks in vital moisture, and keeps soil temperatures stable. As it breaks down, it turns into rich organic matter.

3. Stop Tilling the Ground

It is time to ditch the heavy rototiller. Regular tilling disrupts the natural soil structure and destroys fungal networks that help plants grow. Instead, practice “no-dig” gardening. Layer amendments directly on top and let earthworms do the digging for you.

4. Plant Nourishing Cover Crops

When a garden bed is empty, plant cover crops like clover, vetch, or peas. These incredible plants act as living mulch. Their deep roots open up compacted earth, protect against soil erosion, and naturally pump nitrogen back into the ground.

5. Add Aged Manure

Incorporate well-rotted animal manure to give your soil a massive nutrient boost. Ensure it is aged for at least six months so it doesn’t burn your plant roots. Manure introduces essential nitrogen and organic mass, turning poor dirt into a fertile powerhouse.

Treat your soil like a living ecosystem, and your garden will reward you for years to come!
